Inventory, that oft deadening word. Pity the poor gallerist—likely the poor artist as well—with an inventory deeper than a pocket. Art crated, sedated, wrapped+sapped, withering, dithering, unnaturally quiescent while so digitally candescent. (How many hundreds of thousands of insipid jpegs have we collectively glanced/pored over?)
Whether pro or contra inventory, neophiliac or nostalgiac, solvent or its shuddersome opposite, you’ll have noticed a noxious bloom in the global garden—distant cousin COVID-19 has come to pollinate—and in its woeful wake, financial asphyxiation.
As we’re condemned to (not inauspiciously) weed our inner gardens, might not we weed each other’s too (at a nice distance of course)? Otherwise put… Time for some spring cleaning… A fresh lens on things deemed old… Renewed circulation amidst grim isolation…

You’ll find INVENTORY largely speaks for itself, but it might also interest you that:
- 40% of a sale will go to COVID-19-related charities and/or needy peers of the artist’s choosing.
- 5% of a sale will go to administration of this site (overseen by an experienced, all-too-recently unemployed gallery-worker) and website maintenance/improvements.
- 22% of a sale will go to the gallery in whose inventory the sold work resides/d, in order to keep employees employed, artist payments issued, and doors able to re-open.
- 33% of a sale will go to the artist of the work sold, to be used as they wish.
INVENTORY guarantees its art-for-sale is:
- Authenticated by its author
- Two years or more in age + resident to a gallery’s inventory the majority of that time
- Priced to please (30-90% off primary market price ensured)
- Ready to be shipped/fetched just as soon as we’re out of this mess (for a bit at least!)
- INVENTORY is currently able to host up to 15 new artists a week and up to 10 works an artist. (N.B. only a single edition from editioned works will be allowed.)
- We at INVENTORY will do our best to “curate” thoughtfully and fairly. It’s impossible to say who among applicants has greater need than others (rent/mortgage, employees, debt, children, etc.). For instance: 52 and nearly-broke > 26 and pretty-much-broke; higher price-point = greater charity potential; too many painters or ceramists is not the right approach; etc.

- Sales inquiries will be handled by the gallery with whom an artwork is inventoried.
- Payments must be received within five days of the initial inquiry for a work to be considered sold.

As Solon famously said: “We live in value with hope it keeps.” For two decades now, I’ve obsessive-compulsively asked myself what the word “art” means in this day and age—where and how it resides in thought, emotion, form, time, and commerce. I’ve come to no reliable conclusions—meaning is too porous and accommodating (meaning and value can be synonyms of course).
As my galleries would be swift to attest, the existence of inventory has irked me for some time (I think “vacuum” where others think “wine cellar”). Inventory was first conceived as an auction project designed to be in sync with last November’s New York auctions. There was to be a physical “showroom” in tandem with a web presence, both featuring the same 100-ish inventory works (nearly all of some vintage), which I’d combine into groups of 2 3 4 or 5 to create new discrete works with a very low starting bid. The auction never materialized, and I moved on to pitching a gambling show, involving familiar tools of chance: various-sided dice, a coin, a lottery ball system—I’d leave combinatory inventory constructions and suicidal (i.e. career-jeopardizing) pricing to impartial contingencies.
Then came COVID-19, to tease out a cultural audit of sorts, shining a light on what yet remains too obscure to discern. A lot of people are financially hurting and/or painfully bored (and heck, institutional critique barely has a floor to stand on), hence the INVENTORY site you’re currently on. I hope you find some genuine value in it. Art is ever in the air; it only asks for percipients.
