The series of drawings Model for a Holiday Villa in Spainby Luís Lázaro Matos (1987, Évora, Portugal) was originated by artist’s invitation of a group of international architects to develop a project for a holiday house in Spain inspired by Munch’s painting The Scream. The outcomes were very different: some minimal and austere, other very layered and complex, they all reflected the author’s personal style that often imposed itself on the functionality of architecture and design. Lázaro Matos printed these architectural drawings, on which he intervened correcting them according to his personal idea of holiday house or following the motto of well-known designers. Matos then put his own signature over the architects’ or studio’s name, appropriating the drawing and making it his own work, directly questioning the idea of authorship. Playing on the contrast between the pain and anxiety expressed by Munch’s composition and the entertainment and relaxation the holiday villa should provide, the project investigates also the relationship between fiction and architecture.
